Sar-El, the latest update and this week's news...

Do you want to go and volunteer on Sar-El?
________

The latest from Keren Dahan, CEO of Sar-El Israel:

In the upcoming weeks, we will be opening our doors to foreign volunteers, welcoming you to join us at Sar-El for a unique volunteering experience. If you choose to sign up during these times, there are several important considerations to keep in mind.
1. Please be aware that there is a high likelihood that you may not be accommodated on the military base itself, as many bases may not have the capacity to house civilians. In such cases, we will arrange your lodging in a hotel or similar accommodations nearby.
2. Volunteer assignments may take you to bases all across Israel, including those in the southern and northern regions. Specific locations cannot be guaranteed, as assignments are based on the IDF's current needs.
3. We strongly recommend purchasing flexible flight tickets, as circumstances can change rapidly, and we must prioritize your safety above all else.
4. It's important to note that volunteer hours can be longer than the standard, ranging from 8 am to 8 pm, owing to the significant tasks at hand. The work Sar-El is engaged in holds immense importance for the IDF.
These conditions will be in effect until the end of December. If you find these terms unsuitable for your situation, we encourage you to consider postponing your volunteering plans to a later date.

Your support and dedication mean a great deal to us, and we look forward to having you as part of our team. The importance of the work being done by Sar-El and its volunteers cannot be overstated. The IDF relies on our support more than ever, and your contributions are making a significant difference. For those who may not be able to volunteer at this time, please consider donating so that others may have the opportunity to continue this vital mission. There is a great deal of work ahead, and every bit of support, whether through volunteering or donations, plays a crucial role in ensuring the continued success of our efforts. Thank you for your dedication and commitment to this Israel.

Sar-El on base this week:

Across nine different bases, our collective efforts have yielded remarkable results. We've achieved the assembly of 256,276 boxes of field meals, distributed 17,000 refreshment packs to our brave combat soldiers, skillfully repaired 952 uniforms, assembled 13,130 diverse emergency medical kits, expertly crafted 3,820 ceramic vests, and so much more. These accomplishments showcase the incredible impact that our dedicated volunteers can have, and we are immensely proud of the difference we're making for those who serve in the defense of our nation.

INVITATION – WEEKLY WOMEN'S ZOOM SHIUR

You are invited to join our interactive women's study group exploring foundations of Judaism.

The Chagim calendar this year meant that there were no shiurim on Sundays to prepare for the Chagim after Yom Kippur.

There was a tradition in many European synagogues to announce after Ma'ariv following Simchat Torah and Shabbat Bereishit -

_"V'Yaakov halach ledarko"_

 - which enjoined us to take the many lessons and inspirations from the Chagim into daily life in the year ahead.

In the spirit of collecting lessons from the Chagim to infuse our lives going forward, I have dedicated the next five shiurim to inspirations from the festivals which we didn't explore in our shiur. Below are the forthcoming shiurim up until Chanukah.

Team Oz, who are providing immediate and urgent support to Israeli families and IDF,

On behalf of Team Oz, who are providing immediate and urgent support to Israeli families and IDF, we thank everyone who has generously donated to our campaign. We are working with charities in Israel to provide them with much needed items to families who are displaced, and/or those who have lost their homes.

150 boxes of new underwear, clothes, shoes, nappies, and laptops, that was donated, is currently being flown to Israel. This is an incredible achievement, and we are grateful to our volunteers who have worked tirelessly to make this a reality.

We are in the process of sorting and packing another 4 tons of donations, scheduled for shipment next week. If you wish to assist Israeli families, we need the following *new* items -

Winter clothes (all sizes) – adults, teen, children including hoodies, and tracksuits
Thermals (eg from Uniqlo) black and white – crew neck long sleeved tshirts, and long johns (all sizes)

Any questions, please contact Joanne at president@sephardivic.com.

May the injured have a speedy recovery, may the hostages be returned safely, and may those mourning be comforted from Heaven.

Souper

Dear friends and loyal supporters,
Our community world-wide is navigating through the mostdifficult times in our collective memories.
Due to the war in Israel, global rise in antisemitism and increased cost of living, devastatingly, many kosher hospitality establishments are struggling to make ends meetand are being forced to shut their doors.
Heartbreakingly, Souper Bistro is no exception.
Mimicking Golda Meir's famous sentiment: we have no choice; we have to survive!
And because, Souper is, foremost, a charitable organisation, designed to fight food insecurity within our community, we are not giving up on our most vulnerable people and mustcontinue to provide free, kosher food hampers to 1000s of people each month. Among the people we support are victims of abuse, isolated elderly, refugees, Holocaust survivors, those in financial need and anyone experiencing food insecurity.
Souper Bistro is a social enterprise, with all profits going towards the Souper food security work. While we are grateful for grants and philanthropic support we receive, we operate predominantly with profits that Souper Bistro generates to runthe Souper food security programs.
So today, we humbly ask for your help and support. And while we understand that many of you are preferring to stay in the safety of their home rather than go out, it breaks our hearts to see the dramatic drop in customers at our beloved Souper Bistro.
Each time you consider eating out, ordering takeaway or require business or personal catering, we ask that you do this with Souper.
We would also be very grateful for any donation that you care to make to our charitable work. You can make a tax deductable donation by visiting: https://www.souper.org.au/checkout/donate?donatePageId=62ce1fb288d1d93c91e8c6f1
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

PARSHAH IN A NUTSHELL
Genesis 6:9–11:32
The Parshah is named "Noach" (Noah) after the protagonist of its major event: The Great Flood. It is found in Genesis 6:9.

G‑d instructs Noah—the only righteous man in a world consumed by violence and corruption—to build a large wooden teivah ("ark"), coated within and without with pitch. A great deluge, says G‑d, will wipe out all life from the face of the earth; but the ark will float upon the water, sheltering Noah and his family, and two members (male and female) of each animal species (and 7 of the "pure" species).

Rain falls for 40 days and nights, and the waters churn for 150 days more before calming and beginning to recede. The ark settles on Mount Ararat, and Noah dispatches a raven, and then a series of doves, "to see if the waters were abated from the face of the earth." When the ground dries completely—exactly one solar year (365 days) after the onset of the Flood—G‑d commands Noah to exit the teivah and repopulate the earth.

Noah builds an altar and offers sacrifices to G‑d. G‑d swears never again to destroy all of mankind because of their deeds, and sets the rainbow as a testimony of His new covenant with man. G‑d also commands Noah regarding the sacredness of life: murder is deemed a capital offense, and while man is permitted to eat the meat of animals, he is forbidden to eat flesh or blood taken from a living animal.

Noah plants a vineyard and becomes drunk on its produce. Two of Noah's sons, Shem and Japheth, are blessed for covering up their father's nakedness, while his third son, Ham, is punished for taking advantage of his debasement.

The descendants of Noah remain a single people, with a single language and culture, for ten generations. Then they defy their Creator by building a great tower to symbolize their own invincibility; G‑d confuses their language so that "one does not comprehend the tongue of the other," causing them to abandon their project and disperse across the face of the earth, splitting into seventy nations.

The Parshah of Noach concludes with a chronology of the ten generations from Noah to Abram (later Abraham), and the latter's journey from his birthplace of Ur Casdim to Charan, on the way to the land of Canaan.

HAFTORAH IN A NUTSHELL
Isaiah 54:1-10.

Forsaken Jerusalem is likened to a barren woman devoid of children. G‑d enjoins her to rejoice, for the time will soon come when the Jewish nation will return and proliferate, repopulating Israel's once desolate cities. The prophet assures the Jewish people that G‑d has not forsaken them. Although He has momentarily hid His countenance from them, He will gather them from their exiles with great mercy. The haftorah compares the final Redemption to the pact G‑d made with Noah in this week's Torah reading. Just as G‑d promised to never bring a flood over the entire earth, so too He will never again be angry at the Jewish people.

"For the mountains may move and the hills might collapse, but My kindness shall not depart from you, neither shall the covenant of My peace collapse."

SAGES ON THE PARSHAH

G‑d descended to see the city and the tower which the sons of man had built (11:5)

Obviously, G‑d did not need to "come down" in order to see their crime; but He wished to teach all future judges not to judge a defendant until they see [the case] and understand [it].

PARSHAH IN A NUTSHELL
Genesis 1:1–6:8
The name of the Parshah, "Bereishit," means "In the beginning" and it is found in Genesis 1:1.

G‑d creates the world in six days. On the first day He makes darkness and light. On the second day He forms the heavens, dividing the "upper waters" from the "lower waters." On the third day He sets the boundaries of land and sea, and calls forth trees and greenery from the earth. On the fourth day He fixes the position of the sun, moon and stars as timekeepers and illuminators of the earth. Fish, birds and reptiles are created on the fifth day; land animals, and then the human being, on the sixth. G‑d ceases work on the seventh day, and sanctifies it as a day of rest.

G‑d forms the human body from the dust of the earth, and blows into his nostrils a "living soul." Originally Man is a single person, but deciding that "it is not good that man be alone," G‑d takes a "side" from the man, forms it into a woman, and marries them to each other.

Adam and Eve are placed in the Garden of Eden, and commanded not to eat from the "Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil." The serpent persuades Eve to violate the command, and she shares the forbidden fruit with her husband. Because of their sin, it is decreed that man will experience death, returning to the soil from which he was formed, and that all gain will come only through struggle and hardship. Man is banished from the Garden.

Eve gives birth to two sons, Cain and Abel. Cain quarrels with Abel and murders him, and becomes a rootless wanderer. A third son, Seth, is born to Adam; Seth's eighth-generation descendant, Noah, is the only righteous man in a corrupt world.

HAFTORAH IN A NUTSHELL
I Samuel 20:18–42

Today's haftarah is read on a Shabbat that is immediately followed by Rosh Chodesh. Indeed, the reading opens with the words, "Jonathan said, 'Tomorrow is the [first of the] new month."

The story is one of loyalty and devotion. David and Jonathan are dear friends. Jonathan's father, King Saul, despises David, fearing that he will depose him from the throne. Sensing danger, Jonathan told David to hide in the field rather than attend Saul's Rosh Chodesh feast. Jonathan then attended the feast and gauged the king's mood. Realizing that Saul was determined to kill David, Jonathan went out to the field, shot three arrows and called to his assistant, "The arrow is beyond you," a predetermined signal to his friend that it was not safe to return to the king's palace.

Before parting, the two friends kissed and wept, and swore to maintain their mutual affection for generations to come.

SAGES ON THE PARSHAH

In the beginning G‑d created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1)

The Torah says: "I was the tool of G‑d's artistry." An architect who builds a palace does not do so on his own; he has scrolls and notebooks which he consults regarding how to place the rooms, where to set the doors. So it was with G‑d: He looked into the Torah and created the world.

(Midrash Rabbah)

G‑d looked into the Torah and created the world. Man looks into Torah and sustains the world.

(Zohar)
