RCANZ - Joint Rabbinic Statement on Coronavirus

B"SD

Kvod Horabonim,

The following is a joint statement of the Rabbinical Council of Australia and New Zealand, the Rabbinical Council of Victoria and the Rabbinical Council of New South Wales. Please feel free to disseminate it to your congregations.

During these challenging times and having regard to the most recent announcement of the Prime Minister dated 29/03/2020 we wish to reiterate a number of core priorities and to reinforce the Halachic mandate of these priorities:

1) Continue to strictly adhere to the health guidelines issued by the Department of Health and Human Services and the Prime Minister including social distancing (no minyanim indoors or outdoors, avoid gathering of more than two people, stay home except to shop for essentials, medical purposes, exercise, work or education if these cannot be done remotely) and continuing to wash one's hands regularly.

2) Help others who are struggling financially, physically, emotionally or psychologically. This can be achieved by reaching out to those who need emotional support or contributing money to any of the fundraising initiatives, free loans, food drives and essential product collections which have been established across the community such as the Jewish Care hotline and others. Try to support Kosher eateries via their delivery or take away facilities. Should members of the community seek guidance as to which initiatives have been established please contact your local rabbi or other communal leader.

3) Commit to an extra mitzvah or increased prayer and be particularly vigilant to engender a stronger sense of Ahavat Yisrael within the community.

Should you have any enquiries please do not hesitate to contact me directly at rabbiglasman@gmail.com.

There are 4 different age groups:

WIZO KIDS
•          Prep - Grade 1
•          Grade 2 - 3
•          Grade 4 – 6

WIZO TEENS
•          Year 7 - 10

Each person is able to submit a maximum of 3 individual artworks. Each artwork must fit within a different art form eg. drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, even baking.

Unity Torah

We may be separated in body but let us unite together in spirit by dedicating a Sefer Torah for the whole community!

Join the unity Torah scroll! To purchase a letter, word, Posuk, Amud, Perek, or Parsha please click visit charidy.com/unitytorah!

The only way to face this global challenge is to face it together!

We must do this physically and spiritually.

Physically, we urge everyone to continue to heed strictly to the health guidelines of the Government and medical experts.

Spiritually, Jews throughout the ages have responded to crisis by strengthening our spiritual connection to G-d and to each other.

By dedicating a letter in the Torah for yourself, your children or in memory of a loved one you join thousands of other Jews across the country - bound by the same Torah scroll and united in faith and love for each other!

Why dedicate a letter in the unity Torah scroll?

In the times of the Baal Shemtov there was a terrible outbreak of a dreadful virus in Mezibush. Men, women and children were falling ill to this rampant disease. It reached the point that there was not a single household that did not have within in it at least one ill family member.

Out of desperation, the community leaders turned to the Baal Shem Tov and asked him to pray on behalf of the community that the plague vanish from their midst.

The Baal Shem Tov responded that the annulment of the decree was not something that he could influence. Rather, it was in the community's hands. The Baal Shem Tov explained that the solution to their growing problem was that the entire community participate in the creation of a new Torah.

The people gathered, took upon themselves to do just that and the Baal Shemtov instructed his Sofer (Scribe) to begin writing this Unity Torah. And, amazingly, as the Torah was written, the community began to heal.

This Sefer Torah was referred to as the 'Miracle Sefer Torah.'

In these uncertain times, times of social distancing and isolation, it is more important than ever to stand together and be united.

Let us harness the Χ›Χ— Χ”Χ‘Χ’Χœ שם-Χ˜Χ•Χ‘!

In light of the recent virus sweeping through Australia, New Zealand and around the world, the community Rabbis have encouraged everyone to take part in this initiative in dedicating an Australian NZ unity Sefer Torah which will be loaned for free to any Shule that needs it. To purchase a letter, word, Posuk, Amud, Perek, or Parsha please visit charidy.com/unitytorah!

Our incredible community and country is hurting and many of our neighbours are in need - let's help them. We must spring to action.

You too can be a part of this community effort!

This project is supported by Rabbinical Council of Victoria, the Rabbinical Council of New South Wales and the Rabbinical Council of Australia and New Zealand. & Chabad HQ

Kashering Service Update

*Kollel Menachem Pesach Kashering Update*

We regret to advise the community that due to the COVID-19 restrictions, Kollel Menachem will not be running our annual Pesach Kashering service this year.

We will be sending out easy-to-follow instructions and videos on how to Kasher Keilim at home, together with a list of Rabbonim and contact numbers for questions and guidance.

Otherwise this year you may consider buying some Keilim to use and/or using plastic table-ware.

If you have any queries, please contact  0422455565 or email us kollel@yeshivahcentre.org

May we merit the immediate redemption and be able to celebrate Pesach in Yerushalaim in good health and with our loved ones, with the coming of Moshiach.

PARSHAH IN A NUTSHELL
G‑d calls to Moses from the Tent of Meeting, and communicates to him the laws of the korbanot, the animal and meal offerings brought in the Sanctuary. These include:

• The "ascending offering" (olah) that is wholly raised to G‑d by the fire atop the altar;

• Five varieties of "meal offering" (minchah) prepared with fine flour, olive oil and frankincense;

• The "peace offering" (shelamim), whose meat was eaten by the one bringing the offering, after parts are burned on the altar and parts are given to the kohanim (priests);

• The different types of "sin offering" (chatat) brought to atone for transgressions committed erroneously by the high priest, the entire community, the king or the ordinary Jew;

• The "guilt offering" (asham) brought by one who has misappropriated property of the Sanctuary, who is in doubt as to whether he transgressed a divine prohibition, or who has committed a "betrayal against G‑d" by swearing falsely to defraud a fellow man.

HAFTORAH IN A NUTSHELL
Isaiah 43:21-44:23.

This week's haftorah starts with a rebuke to the Israelites for abandoning the Temple's sacrificial service. Sacrifices are the dominant topic of the week's Torah reading, too.

The prophet Isaiah rebukes the Israelites for turning away from G‑d and refraining from offering sacrifices, turning to idolatry instead. G‑d exhorts the people to return to Him, promising to forgive their transgressions, as is His wont.

The prophet then mentions the futility of serving empty idols which may be crafted by artisans but "neither see nor hear nor do they know…" The haftorah concludes with G‑d's enjoinder to always remember Him and to return to Him.

SAGES ON THE PARSHAH

Vayikra (Leviticus 1:1)

Said Rav Assi: Why do young children begin [the study of Torah] with the book of Leviticus, and not with Genesis? Surely it is because young children are pure, and the korbanot are pure; so let the pure come and engage in the study of the pure.

(Midrash Rabbah)
